 CHOICE OF ANSWERS:

 1. This question paper consists of THREE sections, namely SECTION

       A, SECTION B and SECTION C.

• SECTION A: Creative writing (50 marks)

• SECTION B: Longer transactional writing (30 marks)

• SECTION C: Shorter pieces (20 marks)

2. You are required to answer ONE question from EACH section.

3. There must be evidence that you have planned, proof-read and edited your work.

SECTION A: CREATIVE WRITING

QUESTION 1

Write an essay of 200 – 250 words (approximately 1 to 1½ pages) on ONE of the following topics. Number your essay correctly and give it a title.

There must be evidence that you have planned, proof-read and edited your work.

 1.1 You have been asked to form a new sports club for the teenagers in your immediate community.  Write an essay in which you describe how the club will be managed and what codes of sport the club will cater for.

 1.2 Why the Soccer World Cup in 2010 is so important to South Africa.

 1.3 Write an essay in which the following words appear:

       It was then that I remembered why our country's Constitution has such 

       special and lasting significance for us.

 1.4 How can the government do more to address the problem of housing for the poor.

 OR

 1.5 Write a story entitled: Mama Thembu’s first real house – the story of perseverance and patience in the face of great hardship.

 1.6 Write an essay on a topic that comes to mind when you look at the picture below. Give your essay a title.  

 1.7 Write an essay entitled: Teenagers and fast foods.

 TOTAL SECTION A: 50 marks

 SECTION B: LONGER TRANSACTIONAL WRITING

QUESTION 2

• Choose ONE of the following topics.

• The body of your response should be between 120 – 150 words (approximately

15 – 20 lines).

• There must be evidence that you have planned, proof-read and edited your work.

2.1 LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Many teenagers in your community are conscious of environmental degradation and are keen to support environmental rehabilitation. Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper in which you outline the problems and at the same time offer the assistance of the youth of the area to any government agency willing to address the problem.

2.2 REPORT

Your class project group has completed a survey of the library facilities at school and in the residential area in which the school is located. As the group leader, you are expected to write a report on the participation of group members and the method used to gather your information.

 Use the following headings:

 • Topic

• Purpose of the survey/investigation

• Method used to gather information

• Participation of group members

• Findings

• Conclusion

 2.3 DIALOGUE

As the editor of your school newspaper you have managed to get an interview with a former learner who is now well established in a profession. This person could be a well known doctor, engineer, scientist, architect, professor, or auditor.

Write the interview in dialogue form.

 QUESTION 3

 • Choose ONE of the following topics.

• The body of your response should be between 80 – 120 words

(approximately 8 – 12 lines).

• There must be evidence that you have planned, proof-read and edited your work.

3.1 INSTRUCTIONS

• Choose ONE of the topics below.

• Give your instructions a heading.

• Write the instructions in point form.

• Use full sentences.

 3.1.1 How to use either the Google or Yahoo search engine to find  

            information on climate change.

 OR

 3.1.2 How to maintain a bicycle, computer or motor car.

 OR

 3.1.3 How to protect the skin and keep it from ageing.

 OR

 3.2 POSTER

 Design a poster to encourage people to walk briskly everyday to improve their health.

 Note:

• Your poster must have an eye-catching heading.

• You should give at least 5 points on why walking is so good for health.

• Do not include illustrations in your poster.

 TOTAL SECTION C: 20 marks
